Stop and smell the cookies....

Responsive vs. Spontaneous Desire

Have you ever walked into a kitchen and suddenly craved a cookie—not because you were thinking about cookies before, but because the warm, sweet scent triggered your appetite?

That’s how responsive desire works. Unlike spontaneous desire, which appears out of nowhere, responsive desire builds in reaction to external cues—emotional connection, touch, or even the right mood. It’s completely normal and doesn’t mean something is “wrong” with you or your relationship.

Just like the smell of cookies can awaken your hunger, intimacy, affection, and feeling emotionally safe can awaken your desire. Understanding this can transform how you approach connection with your partner. If you or your partner experience responsive desire, let’s explore what ignites that spark for you.
